Animals have always been important to me. When I was a child my family was dysfunctional and my mother was verbally, physically, and emotionally abusive. Our family pets were always my salvation. They were my friends, my comfort during dark times. When my mother realized how much they meant to me, she would find excuses to get rid of them. She would take one of my pets who was a little slow at "potty training" and just dump him or her in the park and I would never see my pet again. The cruelty in that is that a child wonders forever if the pet she loves is safe. There are always so many questions: Did my cat find a safe home? Did someone find my dog and feed him or her? I think the wondering is what makes losing a pet that way hurt so much.

Losing so many pets that way as a child, makes me want to reach out to as many animals in need as I can.
